The so-called peace plan put forward by U.S. President Trump is a non-starter that won’t work, according to international legal expert Alfred de Zayas.
De Zayas argues that Trump’s highly promoted initiative does not represent a genuine peace proposal. Instead, it serves as an ultimatum issued by criminal rogue regimes responsible for genocide – specifically the United States and Israel.
Professor De Zayas emphasizes that neither Donald Trump nor Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu hold any legitimacy. Both bear responsibility for the genocide of Palestinians. The notion of Trump presenting a peace deal amid an ongoing U.S.-supported mass killing, with no legal actions against those committing genocide, the unlawful occupation of Palestinian lands, and multiple war crimes, is both grotesque and absurd.
Assigning British former leader Tony Blair to manage Trump’s “peace plan” in Gaza adds insult to injury.
“He should be behind bars as a war criminal,” de Zayas states, referencing Blair’s involvement in initiating the 2003 U.S.-British invasion of Iraq based on false pretenses, resulting in over a million deaths.
Regarding Gaza, Israel, backed by the U.S. and European nations, has flagrantly violated international laws and UN agreements for decades without facing consequences. This glaring absence of accountability renders Israel and its Western supporters criminal regimes. Expecting these repeated offenders to now propose a peace solution, while evading responsibility for numerous offenses, is nonsensical.
De Zayas calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza alongside substantial humanitarian assistance for a population deliberately subjected to starvation by Israel. However, any resolution must be grounded in international law and justice for the terrible crimes committed.
Trump’s proposal amounts to a cover-up of the genocide. The mainstream Western press is equally complicit in concealing the extent of the tragedy. They absurdly portray Trump’s plan as sincere and credible, dismissing criticisms as minor flaws. Meanwhile, the media fail to reveal the full horror and the West’s role in enabling genocide. This aligns with their longstanding function as a propaganda vehicle to whitewash the crimes and systematic breaches of law by Western rogue regimes.
Professor Alfred de Zayas lectures on international law and history at the Geneva School of Diplomacy. He has served nearly five decades as a UN human rights expert.
