Elizabeth Vos on the social-media suppression of information that could help U.S service people refuse to join the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran as fears grow that Trump will send ground troops into the conflict.
As the contentious U.S. and Israeli conflict with Iran progresses into its second week, the social media platform X has been blocking accounts of individuals sharing information with military personnel about how to legally decline service. This development comes amid rising concerns that American ground forces might soon be deployed.
The Center on Conscience & War, a nonprofit organization established 80 years ago that, according to its website, “advocates for the rights of conscience, opposes military conscription, and serves all conscientious objectors to war,” experienced a 12-hour suspension on X. Mike Prysner, the center’s executive director, revealed that X flagged their posts for violating platform rules concerning “illegal and regulated behaviors.”

Prysner explained: “This is the post @CCW4COs was suspended for, informing service members of their legal right under DoDI 1332.14 to report ‘failure to adapt’ within first 365 days of service and receive an entry-level discharge.”

Legally, conscientious objection to military service remains protected. Any claim that the posts promote unlawful or improper actions would only stand if such objections were incorrectly characterized as mutiny—a tactic that pro-Israeli social media voices have been aggressively employing recently.
Following conservative commentator Candace Owens’ call for U.S. military personnel to conscientiously object to deployment in Iran, pro-Israel journalist Emily Schrader posted on X:
“This is illegal. She is literally advocating mutiny. Under 18 U.S.C. § 2387 (Advocating overthrow or disloyalty in the armed forces). It is a crime for any person, including civilians, to willfully advocate or attempt to cause:
• insubordination in the armed forces
• disloyalty among service members
• mutiny or refusal of duty
It also criminalizes distributing materials intended to encourage those outcomes.
The penalty can be up to 10 years in prison and fines.”
Other pro-Israel commentators, including billionaire hedge-fund manager Bill Ackman, echoed Schrader’s judgment.
This suspension happened less than a day after Prysner shared on social media concerning reports of troops preparing for combat deployment:
“I just spoke with the mother of a service member in this unit. They were given one last call home before having to turn in their phones. He told his mom they were going ‘boots on the ground’ tonight.”

As reported by The Cradle,
“Mike Prysner … said in posts on X that his office has been overwhelmed with requests for guidance from service members seeking to dodge deployment…. ‘Phone has been ringing off the hook,’ he wrote … adding that many troops had not been told the mission involved combat until the last moment and were initially informed they were heading to training.”
Veteran Greg Stoker commented on X: “Service members knowing their rights is a direct threat to both the secular imperialists who own these apps and the rapturous evangelicals trying to bring about Armageddon.”

There are user reports on X also describing troop mobilization firsthand:
“Spoke to a family member tonight — a Marine stationed in California. He said half\ the troops on base have disappeared in the past couple days and that the situation is chaos with those still remaining.”
Despite official statements denying ground troop involvement at this stage, President Donald Trump has kept the possibility open. Democrats expressed concern after a classified briefing on March 4.
Democracy Now! shared that Sen. Richard Blumenthal remarked, “I just want to say I am more fearful than ever, after this briefing, that we may be putting boots on the ground.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren also commented post-briefing:
“I just left a classified briefing on Iran, and here’s what I can say. It is so much worse than you thought. You are right to be worried. The Trump administration has no plan in Iran. This illegal war is based on lies, and it was launched without any imminent threat to our nation. Donald Trump still hasn’t given a single clear reason for this war, and he seems to have no plan for how to end it, either.”
At a time when thousands of U.S. troops are facing a likely imminent deployment to a widely unpopular conflict with Iran, the blocking of an account that provides servicemembers with guidance on how to legally object on conscientious grounds is especially significant.

According to The New York Times, public support for U.S. involvement in Iran is remarkably low, with polling data showing approval ratings between 27 percent in a Reuters/Ipsos poll and 41 percent in a CNN survey—well below the backing seen by previous presidents at the start of overseas military actions.
Many perceive this intervention as primarily benefiting Israel, especially given candid remarks from officials like U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated:
“The president made the very wise decision: We knew that there was going to be an Israeli action, we knew that that would precipitate an attack against American forces, and we knew that if we didn’t preemptively go after them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties.”
Veteran activists are also speaking out against the war and encouraging troops to resist service. As reported by Breakthrough News, during a rally in Chicago on Saturday, veteran Daniel Lakemacher called on U.S. soldiers to “refuse this illegal and immoral war” on Iran.
“To all those who are not yet deployed: Now is the time to resist.”

This anti-war stance was echoed by former U.S. Marine Sgt Brian McGinnis, a Green Party Senate candidate in North Carolina, who was forcibly removed from a recent congressional hearing after protesting that “America does not want to send its sons and daughters to war for Israel.”
During the incident, Sen. Tim Sheehy and police officers reportedly fractured McGinnis’s arm in their effort to eject him. Subsequently, multiple assault charges were filed against him.

The aggressive crackdown on a veteran’s anti-war expression as well as the suppression of information empowering military members to lawfully refuse service reveal the government’s desperate efforts to maintain its capacity to compel Americans to fight for Israel’s interests.
As the president and his supporters display increasing difficulty in coherently explaining the U.S. role—Trump recently referenced beheaded babies and the Oct. 7 incident when discussing strikes on Iran’s water desalination plants—resistance to the war grows, even within military ranks.
During this perilous period, when an American conflict is rapidly escalating beyond control, censoring or criminalizing the right of U.S. service members to act according to their conscience is unacceptable.
