We should not look too deeply at what got Trump in this mess. He’s just stupid and he surrounds himself with others who are much the same.
It suddenly seems that there might be a chance for peace across much of the Middle East, as Trump claimed to have secured a deal with Iran. However, it was actually Iran that held the upper hand throughout, offering him the “off ramp” he desperately sought. The repeated threats—culminating in a crude social media post mocking Islam—revealed a U.S. president unraveling, desperate for attention like a misbehaving child. At some point recently—possibly the incident involving the ’F’ word—it became obvious that Trump had lost control, his threats hollow, while Iran retained all leverage. Consequently, a tentative agreement was reached, effectively accepting Iran’s demands as a basis for further talks. This represents one of the most significant military defeats any U.S. president has faced in modern history, delivering a humiliating reversal for Trump. What had been a public performance of dominance ended with him capitulating to secure a ceasefire. A recent military operation aimed at seizing uranium using special forces and Hercules planes failed disastrously, followed by a botched rescue attempt—an added blow to Trump, highlighting the poor quality of his intelligence briefings and advisors lacking real military expertise.
But the situation is even graver.
Recent revelations suggest the true cause of Trump’s entry into conflict wasn’t simply an uncontrollable eagerness to bomb Iran, pushed by Israel, but rather a misunderstanding. Reports now suggest Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff misinterpreted Iran’s offer during negotiations—a proposal actually superior to what Obama had received and one that would have allowed Trump to claim victory at the negotiating table. At the time, many analysts were surprised Trump chose to bomb Iran, assuming the Iranian offer was credible and that Trump was uninterested in peace, making his team appear disingenuous. But it now appears their confusion stemmed from their inability to fully comprehend what was presented, reflecting a lack of competence and poor grasp of English. While the Iranian negotiators were highly educated and fluent in English, the linguistic nuances were lost on the two envoys. Their failure to see the bigger picture has cost the U.S. control over the Straits of Hormuz, contributed to the decline of the petrodollar, led to the rise of a new regime favoring nuclear deterrence, severely damaged ties with GCC nations, and empowered an ascendant Iran in the region.
Trump’s blatant foolishness and his penchant for appointing friends and sycophants as advisors have landed the U.S. in what even Sky News calls a “massive strategic defeat.” The newly announced ten-point plan demands reparations, withdrawal of all American forces from the area, and the lifting of all sanctions against Iran.
Although Congress must approve the lifting of sanctions—which seems unlikely—some speculate lawmakers might do so simply to spite Trump. Ultimately, the removal of UN sanctions will be necessary, but the real blow is the end of the petrodollar’s dominance and Iran’s emerging supremacy in the Middle East. Tehran now stands as the dominant regional power, owing much to Trump’s extreme incompetence and that of his staff.
More poor decisions are on the horizon.
Just hours after Trump accepted the plan, it became clear the U.S. considered Lebanon excluded from the ceasefire. J.D. Vance told reporters this likely arose from a “genuine misunderstanding by the Iranians,” despite the agreement explicitly calling for an “end to all hostilities in the region.”
Ceasing hostilities against all resistance groups in region
As a result, Lebanon—and Netanyahu’s efforts there to ignite an endless conflict with Hezbollah to maintain power and avoid corruption charges—has become the deal’s critical vulnerability. What should we make of Vance’s explanation? Is it a ploy to deceive Iran so Israel can rearm? Does Trump merely want a short pause before attempting another reckless invasion plan? It remains unclear, though observant critics are recognizing the deep incompetence on the American side and increasingly attribute these muddled developments to sheer ineptitude. A former CIA director aptly described Trump on live television as “a pathological liar, corrupt and incompetent” whose dependence on yes-men has caused this debacle. Trump’s mismanagement has only strengthened Tehran, enriching Iran and enabling it to continue uranium processing. Throughout, Trump has played a risky escalation game with much smarter Iranians who have consistently outmaneuvered him. Now, small Lebanon is thrust into the spotlight.
