President AOC’s First Term
The date is August 20th, 2032.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is approaching the end of her inaugural presidential term.
The initial wave of hopeful enthusiasm that propelled her into office has dissipated. Yet, the impact remains significant. With control over both the Senate and House, the Democrats executed sweeping changes.
They began by abolishing the Senate filibuster, removing the requirement for 60 votes to approve most bills. Now, only a simple majority is necessary. This move is comparable to a political nuclear strike.
Subsequently, AOC’s alliance enabled the creation of two new states: Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. This added four Democratic Senators and increased Democratic representation in the House.
The Supreme Court was rapidly expanded from 9 to 13 justices. The Court’s size has fluctuated before, and the Constitution sets no fixed number.
Justice Clarence Thomas, the last Constitutionalist on the bench, retired in 2028 due to health complications. Consequently, the nation’s top court welcomed five new neoliberal judges.
ICE was dismantled almost instantly. Immigration—both lawful and unlawful—has spiraled out of control. An additional 11 million undocumented immigrants arrived, mainly from Latin America, along with 4 million visa holders. Another 4 million refugees and “asylum seekers” came from Africa and the Middle East.
This influx of immigrants suppressed wages for American workers, inflated real estate costs, transformed small towns, and strained social welfare systems.
Green cards are now issued to immigrants residing in the country for three years, regardless of entry method. Citizenship and voting rights follow after six years.
The Democrats have strategically positioned themselves for enduring majorities.
Fruits of the Revolution
This year, unemployment soared to 18%, even with data manipulation. The influence of AI, outsourcing, and incompetent leadership has been detrimental.
The federal deficit ballooned to $5.3 trillion. The stagflation that started in 2029 shows no signs of abating.
Inflation stands at 16%. Gasoline prices have surged to $11.34 per gallon, and diesel costs $15, if available. One-third of American oil refineries have been closed under new environmental regulations.
Individuals with net worth above $1 million now pay a 3% wealth tax annually. Entire family businesses are forced to sell at bargain prices. Many affluent Americans are leaving the country, taking their fortunes with them.
Frequent blackouts plague major cities. No new power plants have been constructed, and data centers continue to stress the electric grid. With copper prices reaching $30 per pound, thieves ruthlessly steal cabling wherever possible.
The Green New Scam escalated dramatically. Huge sums were granted to politically favored individuals to fund high-speed rail, electric cars, and “carbon-free” energy projects. The results have been disastrous.
Censorship on social media platforms, reminiscent of the Biden era, has returned.
‘Equality’
Households earning under $80,000 annually now receive a Universal Basic Income (UBI) of approximately $30,000 per year. This amount barely sustains an average family.
Early enthusiasm for UBI faded as the lack of incentive to work fostered widespread lethargy nationwide. Tent cities have proliferated, and drug addiction has intensified.
DEI initiatives made a forceful comeback. All of President Trump’s executive orders were reversed within AOC’s first month. Companies face severe penalties if they employ too many white male executives. Diversity quotas are strictly enforced.
Universal healthcare was implemented in 2030. If the previous system was problematic, this one is nightmarish. Patients often endure year-long waits for specialists. Need diagnostic imaging? Not likely.
Healthcare fraud has surged as criminals exploit the vulnerable system.
These past few years have been difficult. Nevertheless, AOC is poised to secure a second term, bolstered by millions of newly enfranchised immigrant voters.
Back to the Present
This article serves as a speculative exercise, imagining what might unfold if Democrats capture Congress and the presidency in 2028.
Honestly, this scenario isn’t far-fetched. It could very well come to pass.
The Republican Party must rapidly reorganize.
Trump desperately needs to end the conflict with Iran before the midterms. The war is deeply unpopular among independents and libertarian-leaning conservatives. Failure to do so would increase the probability of a socialist landslide. As detailed above, such an outcome could have disastrous consequences.
Republicans cannot afford to allow this outcome. They should negotiate peace with Iran promptly and focus back on American voters. If hostilities persist and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed by midterms, the GOP faces a grim outlook. That scenario heavily favors the Democrats.
Should a socialist like AOC emerge victorious, it would spell trouble for all Americans, especially entrepreneurs and investors. Our colleague Jim Rickards recently observed:
The rise of socialism inside the Democratic Party is an enormously important political story on its own. But it also has huge investment implications that could affect your portfolio.
Many democratic socialists favor higher taxes on wealthy households, expanded government healthcare and tuition programs and sweeping changes to policing, immigration and other institutions. Some prominent figures on the left have also supported “wealth taxes” — which would tax certain holdings of property, shares, bonds and other assets rather than merely income.
Jim is spot on, as usual. Much hangs in the balance. A victory by someone like AOC could set the nation back for decades, if not longer.
