John Mearsheimer explains how the American Empire fell into one of its most significant strategic errors and explores the potential global consequences.
As the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran continues into its second week, the strategies of both America and Israel appear increasingly unclear, while Iran’s determination grows stronger. Professor John Mearsheimer, a distinguished figure in international affairs, returns to The Chris Hedges Report with host Chris Hedges to outline what might lie ahead in this crisis.
Mearsheimer reviews the known facts about the war to date, including Benjamin Netanyahu’s success in persuading an American president to finally initiate this long-anticipated strike on Iran, despite hesitation from members within Trump’s administration. He also discusses the broader impact of the conflict on the global economy; Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz threatens countries in East Asia, like South Korea and Japan, alongside the entire European continent.
“You could have a worldwide depression. You could have something less than that, like a worldwide recession, that would have huge consequences for people all over the planet, especially in developing countries, less so in developed countries. But even in developed countries, it’s quite clear that the importance of oil for running the international economy simply can’t be underestimated,” Mearsheimer tells Hedges.
