On September 30, 1965, the Indonesian military and affiliated militias, supported by West Germany and the United States, exploited a failed coup attempt as justification to execute up to three million alleged communists. This film draws on documents from the West German government to reveal Bonn’s involvement in this mass killing.
These documents reveal that Bonn was aware of the killings within the first week. The West German ambassador described the mass murder as “a cleansing entirely in our interest” and referred to those responsible as “our friends in the army.” West Germany assisted by promoting military propaganda, providing financial support, and supplying weapons to prevent Indonesia from falling under communist influence or recognizing the GDR. Notably, six of the initial seven West German envoys to Jakarta were former Nazi party members or propagandists. To this day, Berlin denies what it terms “the hypothesis of support.”
