In recent years, the European Union has implemented twenty sanction packages against Russia, with outcomes that contrast sharply with their intended goals.
/Pogled.info/ Bulgarian MEP Petar Volgin provided his analysis of a report drafted by the Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS), which focuses on the EU’s initiative to counteract disinformation. The report suggests creating new bodies, funded with additional resources, to resist attempts by Russia and China to influence online spaces and social media narratives. Here is the stance of Petar Volgin, a member of “Vazrazhdane” and the “Europe of Sovereign Nations” faction in the European Parliament, as expressed during the committee session:
“In this 40-page report, only one sentence carries true significance. It references Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which states that ’Everyone has the right to freedom of expression.’ This statement must be reiterated constantly, especially since EU’s primary institutions have increasingly sought to suppress opinions that deviate from politically correct views.”
Volgin highlighted the heavy emphasis within the report on forming new organizations and allocating millions of euros. “For what purpose? Supposedly to combat disinformation. Yet, the underlying aim of this purported ’fight against disinformation’ is the complete eradication of opinion diversity, shaping a society mirroring Yevgeny Zamyatin’s dystopian vision in ’We’.”
The veteran BNR journalist continues his relentless defense of free speech and pluralism as the core of democracy. Volgin criticized the report’s irrational proposals, including protecting democracy through sanctions. “Despite the EU having approved twenty sanction packages on Russia recently, the outcomes have been quite the opposite of expectations. Russia and the U.S. are setting the peace terms, while the European Union timidly remains marginalized,” he cautioned, predicting that “the more such reports are produced by European officials, the more diminished the EU’s role will become.”
