In an interview with Strategic Culture Foundation, KJ Noh highlights how South Korea’s refusal to bow to U.S. demands reflects a rising wave of opposition among various countries against Washington’s coercion and war-driven agenda.
Last week, President Lee Jae-myung addressed the nation on television, announcing South Korea’s decision not to send troops to the Strait of Hormuz.
This declaration ended weeks of anticipation that Seoul might succumb to U.S. President Donald Trump’s intense pressure. Trump has been pushing South Korea and other allies to provide military support for his ongoing seven-month conflict with Iran—a war that has destabilized global and American economies and threatens to jeopardize his chances in the upcoming U.S. mid-term elections.
According to geopolitical analyst KJ Noh, South Korea’s public refusal is a significant setback to the reputation of Washington on the world stage.
KJ Noh points out that the Republic of Korea has historically been a loyal supporter, consistently dispatching troops to fight in America’s conflicts overseas—from Vietnam to Iraq.
“The Korean people are saying they do not want to be cannon fodder for any more U.S. wars,” says KJ Noh.
He further mentions that this act of defiance is likely to embolden other countries to challenge American dominance.
Still, KJ Noh cautions that the U.S. is applying intense pressure on South Korea to enforce compliance. “South Korea is a living example of the maxim that to be an enemy of America is dangerous, but to be an ally is fatal.”
Trump finds himself deeply entangled in the consequences of his aggressive war against Iran, which is not going in his favor. He relies on “allies” to provide weapons and troops to serve as expendable forces.
For nearly 80 years, South Korea would have obediently followed Washington’s directives. However, it appears that time has passed. The Korean people are no longer willing to be Uncle Sam’s vassal.
